Designing with YOU in Mind

When it comes to creating a space that is perfect for YOU,

it is important that the designer has YOU at the forefront of their minds.

Here at TCI we make it some of our first questions and definitely our top priority to find out what makes you… YOU.

We always ask a few questions that can play into the design in so many ways…find out what those questions are and HOW they transpire into the design:

1. How does your family live?

- it is important to know which rooms are the most “lived in”

- do you have kids or pets that like to “rearrange” things

- do you prefer to live comfortably with little clutter or more streamlined and organized

This particular client loved to be comfortable… yet wanted a chic appearance. So we combined the soft sofa with the clean white fabric for a great pair.

2. Do you have any particular items that are meaningful to you that you would like to incorporate into your home?

- many times clients will have a piece of furniture passed down through the family or a set of china that has a particular color way that we will use as a jumping off point for the design

The client has a set of china that is displayed in the tops of her cabinets that combined the yellow and gray color ways that now make up her kitchen!

3. What is the color that you are most drawn to?

- most clients have a color that they just LOVE. We love to incorporate this. It is important for each client to feel at home in their HOME.

- this also personalizes the space to make it THEIR OWN!

This client loved the color blue but already had this dining table set that did not incorporate that color. So we put on our thinking caps and were able to pull it all together!!

A different type of post today as I take a break from client projects and think

about the essence of being unique. My parents decided to spell my name differently

and as I thought it was a pain growing up and correcting the spelling constantly,

I have learned that I truly love the fact that it is different... so am I.

During a spell of "googling" myself (hey, we have to do it:), I stumbled across the

blog "Traci with an I" and I laughed as I recounted my task of repeating this at

every new Starbucks I go in. Who wants to spend the morning staring at a cup

with your name spelled wrong??? Duh.

And then I was asked this common question during an interview last week-

"What is your philosophy on Design and Life?"

Smirking and pondering this question while I was getting ready and spritzing myself
with my favorite perfume, Coco Mademoiselle, my answer was perfectly clear.

That goes for design... that goes for life.

The Way to a Designer's Heart

Do you have a friend, mother, wife, sister, or colleague that is an Interior Designer or just loves to Design? These are 10 things that we find very true when coming from the other side's perspective of design ;)

1. Don’t get attached to anything….furniture, prints, paint color, etc.

2. Don’t ask why every lamp in the house is on….and don’t start talking about the peaks in the electricity bill when all the lights are on.

3. Pillows are not for comfort…….if the pillows on the couch are strategically placed, chopped in the middle and fluffed - Sit on the floor!

4. If she asks do you notice anything different?… First look at her hair, then start looking at the wall for new pictures or paint color….

5. If she needs help drawing straight lines, don’t just eyeball it and use a pen to mark on the wall… get a long level and use a pencil…..lesson learned.

6. If she is intently staring at a blank wall, don’t make any plans for the weekend.

7. Be prepared to go anywhere at anytime to retrieve a great Goodwill or Craigslist find and don’t question how ugly it is. You might also want to take some security with you.

8. Don’t just invite people into your house without having at a minimum a weeks notice….not even the guys.

9. A garage is not for parking. It’s for goodwill and craigslist finds that need to be sanded and painted.

10. Just go with it…whatever color, whatever frame, whatever idea….because it will again change sometime in the near future.

The fireplace, a center focal point of most living rooms....why not start here when deciding to give your room a facelift? When you change the focal point of the room...everything seems more fresh, clean and well designed. A "fireplace design".

We are doing more and more fireplaces daily! This is a concept photo for a clean lined - stacked stone fireplace for a client...

And here is the impressive "before" and "after"! The mantel is being installed this week ;)

While the architecture of the fireplace most definitely makes the biggest impact structurally as well as visually, many times the mantel decor can accentuate the impressive lines of the fireplace.

Symmetry vs Asymmetrical

Start with a large object in the center, then place pairs of objects on either side. They don’t have to be identical, just related. Symmetry doesn’t have to mean stiff — the organic shapes of branches and seedpods keep this arrangement casual.

An asymmetrical arrangement harmonizes objects of different shapes and sizes. Balance a tall, large object with several smaller ones. Nestle the assemblage tightly together to increase its visual weight, and overlap shapes to create layers. A similar color palette gives unrelated objects a theme.

Minimalistic

There is always something elegant and striking about a simplistic design. Don’t be afraid to “not clutter”

Let's Get Real in the Laundry Room

This is what happens when you put your kids
in charge of the laundry during the work week...
Really? UGH!

For those of you who have your clothing under control,
you can think past the clutter and enjoy the space
where you spend soooo much time-

Laundry Rooms...
the place you hope no one ever looks in, and you wish you didn't cringe
when you walked in yourself! If only we ALL had the great big spaces like this:

Beyond the heaps, I do think that a laundry
room CAN be a pleasant place. Even by just the change of a
wall color, or ORGANIZATION, you can make it a great room of the house!

Add some art...or decor! No one ever said you couldn't
decorate your laundry room!
