HOW TO...Choose Paint for your Living Room

HOW TO...Choose Paint for your Living Room

Paint may be the most difficult thing for the majority of our clients...and for good reason! There are MILLIONS of paint options and color out there! How do you narrow it down?
Where do you even start?!

We have found a few tips recently featured on Pottery Barn to help you in this exciting
patience-trying experience ;)

1. Narrow your Focus:

We like to look at the full picture of your home design when selecting paint...what other colors do you have throughout? Are you trying to bring in color to a neutral house?
Many times we will play off of an accent color already in the house. For example, if the main furniture is all neutral, but the pillows or art have a pop of sea green...may be paint the walls a soft green color. OR if you already have a lot of color, we pick a great neutral.

2. Slow Down:
Decide on a handful of colors and take a trip to the paint store! Buy small samples of each of the paints and paint a poster board with these samples. Place these poster boards in various places throughout your room and look at them in all lights (daytime, dusk, nighttime, etc). This will help you really know what you will be getting. TIP.. from our experience... do not paint samples directly
on wall! It can leave a sheen behind which is noticeable under new paint...

3. Put it in Neutral:
You're always safe with a neutral! But watch out for those neutrals that might turn yellow...not good! You don't want your house to have a yellowish-hue to it. You want classic, sophisticated and of course...neutral.

4. Get to the Finish:
The infamous question...what is the best finish? Well...for walls never go with with a high gloss. The two that most people flip-flop between is eggshell and flat.
We prefer the flat finish here at TCI, this give you no "shine" on your walls, just a nice even coated finish. But a flat finish might be a bit harder to keep clean. With an eggshell finish, you can wipe off grease and grim very easily.... for our clients with little ones.

5. Enjoy your Choice!
Afterwards, sit back and love your decision!
Maybe even make a mobile out of all your leftover paint swatches ;)

If you get stuck, we do paint consults by the hour and would love to help!!

HOW TO...Update your Home in Minutes

HOW TO...Update your Home in Minutes!

As we always say to our clients..."people notice what's wrong before what's right"...
SO adding a few pops to fix the "wrongs" makes all the difference ;)

Here are a few tips to help you jump start your home:

1. Make an Entrance
Adding color and fabric to the entrance of your home instantly helps to soften the arrival, and create a more approachable entrance. Whether it is through a small settee, or an area rug and a gallery wall of art...this area sets the tone for the rest of your home.

2. Fabric Eye Catchers
What catches YOUR eye first?! Probably the pretty patterns in pillows and drapes. This is an easy addition for a huge change. Once you decide your scheme for your home, you can add patterned or colored pillows and drapes to create a cohesive look.

3. Remake your Bed
Sounds silly?? Try it!! Just a fresh re-make will help your pillows stand up taller and you stand a little straighter knowing your bed is neat and tidy ;)

It's as easy as that ;)!! Have fun!

HOW TO...Keep you Organized

The blog world is buzzing with tons of organization ideas,
yet implementing is another story in my case.

I spent the afternoon helping watching and directing
my friend Patty as she cleaned out her closet and returned
home ready to overhaul my own.

Then I sat down... and now I'm here.

Get organized but keep reading to learn-

HOW TO...Keep Organized
It's a new year, full of new ideas and most of all...resolutions!
How about organization?? Is that one of your resolutions?!

Check out these ideas BHG put out for those like us that love to organize!

1. Separate with Stylish Items
How many stacks of napkins, fabric, or papers do you have that need to be sorted? Go to your nearest office supply store and find a cute clamp for all your organizational needs ;)

2. Visable Storage
If you can see it...FIX IT! Take a trip to Target...buy some clear crates and get to sorting.
You'll be happy you did... I was:)

3. Stand up Straight
Everything looks more organized when it is neatly stacked. Use two pieces of fabric and some beans insert to make a make-shift book end!

4. Ledge Logic
Why not make use of the side of that wall shelf?? A running calendar awaits you.

5. Handle Space
I don't know about your house, but items like scarfs, ties and belts get quickly tangled and thrown on the floor around here! Find a favorite handle at Home Depot for an easy storage solution!

HOW TO...Choose Furniture for your Living Room

HOW TO.....Choose Furniture for your Living Room.

Where do we start every time we begin a new living room project? Well...you ask? Actually, we are sourcing furniture for a new living room project today!

Read on to see a few tips we have complied from Pottery Barn and around the design world when designing a living room and "how-to" make the right selections!

1. Start with the Basics:
Every living room needs a sofa, coffee table or ottoman, and lighting. After you decide on these main items, then it is easy to add lounge chairs, side tables and accessories. Just like icing on the cake!

2. Avoid the Trends
Stay classy...you don't want to make the investment of nice, new furniture, only to realize it has that "dated" look 5 years later. We like to say, stick with clean lines and classic shapes for your larger furniture pieces and make a statement in your art, colors and accessories ...
or a few smaller furniture pieces.
3. Do the Math
Get out that tape measure! Once you know what type of furniture you like, now it is time to make sure it fits! Use painters tape or a scaled drawing to draw out the pieces of furniture and be sure everything you love will fit correctly. What is worse that buying, loving and investing in a piece of furniture, for it to only come in and not fit?!

4. Stick to a Plan
Once you have made all your decisions, stay true to your plan. It's easy to second, triple guess yourself. But don't worry...you did good! Bring your design together with great lighting and accessories,
and step back to admire!
