Designing with YOU in Mind

When it comes to creating a space that is perfect for YOU,
it is important that the designer has YOU at the forefront of their minds.

Here at TCI  we make it some of our first questions and definitely our top priority to find out what makes you… YOU.
We always ask a few questions that can play into the design in so many ways…find out what those questions are and HOW they transpire into the design:

1. How does your family live?
- it is important to know which rooms are the most “lived in”
- do you have kids or pets that like to “rearrange” things
- do you prefer to live comfortably with little clutter or more streamlined and organized
This particular client loved to be comfortable… yet wanted a chic appearance. So we combined the soft sofa with the clean white fabric for a great pair.

2. Do you have any particular items that are meaningful to you that you would like to incorporate into your home?
- many times clients will have a piece of furniture passed down through the family or a set of china that has a particular color way that we will use as a jumping off point for the design

The client has a set of china that is displayed in the tops of her cabinets that combined the yellow and gray color ways that now make up her kitchen!

3. What is the color that you are most drawn to?
- most clients have a color that they just LOVE. We love to incorporate this. It is important for each client to feel at home in their HOME.
- this also personalizes the space to make it THEIR OWN!

This client loved the color blue but already had this dining table set that did not incorporate that color. So we put on our thinking caps and were able to pull it all together!!
What makes YOU ... you?

New Home Journals - Courtney's House

Part 2 of our NEW HOME JOURNALS!

Today we are excited to walk you through Courtney's
beginning stages of her family's home build!

And like we started off with Terra's -- We first kick off with THE LOT!

On a little over a 1/3rd of an acre in McKinney, this cul-de-sac lot will give plenty of room for their growing family to have years of play-worthy backyard space!

The full brick home with accented cedar garage doors and shutters
will provide a nice contrast to the landscaping around.

Courtney chose to use all rectangular and square windows instead of half-moon or eyebrow windows throughout the home. This makes life SO much easier when it comes to window treatments as well ;)

A few of the home specs!:
3700 Sq Ft
4 Bedroom
3.5 Baths
Custom Kitchen
Family Room
Media Room
Gameroom/Playroom
Office
And Much More...

FIRST FLOOR:
 SECOND FLOOR:

Many of the finishes are completely selected and concepts are already starting to form! Courtney's vision for the home is light and airy. The minimalistic view of "less is more" will be put into play throughout the space.

Terra and Courtney: New Home Journals - Part 1

But "you do this for a living, it must be SO fun to design your own home!!!….."
It's a common misconception about Interior Designers ;)

Today we are starting a series about our very own … Terra and Courtney!
Ironically, they are both building new homes… across the street from each other!!

We want to share with you our build-journeys.
The good, the bad, AND the ugly ;) But hopefully mostly the good!

When it comes to building your own home, and you are a designer…
it is 100 times harder than designing for a client!
Because you are your hardest critic.

Today we will walk you through Terra's beginning stages in her home build!

First off -- The LOT.
Sitting on a beautiful 1/2 acre in Prosper, this "piece of dirt" will transform
into a gorgeous homesite for her and her family.

The official sign-off on the lot!

The most incredible part of this home is that Terra and her husband are actually the
architect AND designers on the project.
Every detail has been thought out and drawn by THEM!

Terra pulled out her drafting markers from school and went to town on the
front elevation of their home. The realistic drawing gives them a visual
to begin the design of their home.

A few of the House Specs
4,729 SF

Much More…
Like we mentioned before, the beauty of this home, is that Terra has been
able to design this home exactly how she wants and to fit her and her families needs.

The final floor plan is perfect!

Traci "with an I"

A different type of post today as I take a break from client projects and think
about the essence of being unique. My parents decided to spell my name differently
and as I thought it was a pain growing up and correcting the spelling constantly,
I have learned that I truly love the fact that it is different... so am I.

During a spell of "googling" myself (hey, we have to do it:), I stumbled across the
blog "Traci with an I" and I laughed as I recounted my task of repeating this at
every new Starbucks I go in. Who wants to spend the morning staring at a cup
with your name spelled wrong??? Duh.

And then I was asked this common question during an interview last week-

"What is your philosophy on Design and Life?"

Smirking and pondering this question while I was getting ready and spritzing myself
with my favorite perfume, Coco Mademoiselle, my answer was perfectly clear.

That goes for design... that goes for life.

Dare to be different, Friends. You'll like it-

Mission Accomplished in NYC

I scored in the Big Apple...

As I mentioned in my Bday blog post here, I was on a quest to see the Broadway
musical, Wicked, for the fourth time in nine months!  Yes, you can call me a groupie...
I don't deny it.

London in December, San Francisco in April, Dallas in June
and NYC in September!

There was no stopping me!

 NYC Mission One...accomplished!

I do have to say that I had a smile on my face the entire show.  There's something
about the music that just "gets" me... not sure, but I do love it~  I have to say
that I am satisfied with my Wicked quota this year:).

The real reason for my jaunt to NYC last week was to attend the
Creating beautiful design work is only half of running my business!

Now to the next best part of my trip-

NYC Mission Two... accomplished!

I met my Interior Design Mentor... Idol?... Icon?...
(or all of the above!)

She is an Interior Design superstar who not only creates stunning spaces but
has a widely recognized design blog... and now a product line, soon a web based tv show,
art gallery... and more!

Her sense of style and use of color and pattern where the first things that caught my eye
and I'm ready to infuse some of Fun with Color in your home.

Hey~ if they can do it in Arkansas, we can do it in Dallas!

Here are a few pics of her fabulous work:

Crisp!

I've shown this to several of you for inspiration- love the stripes on the cocktail ottoman

Here I go again with the turquoise and orange- fabulous space!

More on my trip in posts to come, but for now...

Cheers to the vibrant city of New York...

Until next time,
Traci
