Powder Bath Floor Play

We love changing up the ordinary to the unexpected in spaces you might not expect.

A powder bath is a space that is easily overlooked. Small, ordinary, and a place people view as an area to "save".
BUT why make it less than satisfactory when it could turn it into something incredible?!

What do we do to achieve that?

LOOK DOWN. The floor.

There is so much you can do with a simple tile pattern. Whether it is creating a visual effect....

Or turning a stone on different angles....

A floor can set the tone by a milestone. Here we used a simple small mosaic to echo a wallpaper used throughout the walls!

Now don't overlook the ordinary and always look to the floor for inspiration!

Let the Flooring Steal the Show

Many times, we as designers spend so much time filling wall space, countertops, tables and sofas that areas such as the FLOORING goes overlooked.

But it shouldn't!

Flooring can be the most important part if you let it be! Read on to find out why!

1. Darken the floors to achieve the "swimming pool effect".
When your pool floor has been painted darker it makes it seem deeper.
The same is true for outside the water too! A darker floor gives the room more height!

2. Lighten the floors to soften the room.
For a quiet, homey space, try painting the floors white!

3. Use an out of the ordinary color to become the ordinary.
The more you use it, the more it becomes a "neutral" color.

4. Be bold and loud to help make the room more comfortable.
With the bright green floors in this room, it takes the uncomfort out of any feeling and places it within the flooring instead!

 5. Paint the treads of a staircase to help define each step and set apart each movement.

6. Pull from other colors around the space.
In this outdoor area, the natural citrine/green color pulls from the trees around the porch
for a cozy space.

Are you brave enough to paint YOUR floors?!

Set the Tone with Flooring

Different types of flooring can set the stage for the whole room...
and we are knee deep in selecting options for our new build projects!

Let's start with Exhibit A : The Bedroom! Once you've selected what stage you will set with your floor, the rest will fall into place.

Here are 5 ways to kick start your most restful room.

1. Go soft with silk: You can't go wrong with a cloud like texture beneath your toes. This will give the room a relaxed, comfortable sense of style

2. Warm up with wood: For a more refined, clean and sharp look, we choose wood. This will also give the space a warm glow with the color of wood.

3. Add a pop with colorful rug: When the room starts to become monochrome, we add a colorful rug to separate the tones.

4. Weave texture with sisal: For a more natural, earthy style, the sisal or jute rug can be used. This brings the outdoors in and feel almost like a retreat or spa atmosphere.

5. Be refined yet weathered: Wanting to feel comfortable yet not completely put together? This look is for you. A rough painted wood floor transforms the style of this room.

What do YOU choose for your style and look?
How do you step out of your bed each morning?

Allen Bowl: A Celebration of Change!

A busy start to 2011 for Connell Interiors...
and I'm so excited about this new project!

If you are local to the North Dallas area, you may have
ventured into Allen Bowl from time to time.

Great spot for bowling... not so great to bring the kids!

Until now-

We are transforming the "Dungeon" as they call it...
a smoky game room with a lot of band aids
into the perfect Party Space!

It's official and here's the skinny:

Woo hoo!

1. Walls are coming down...
2. Entire ceiling is being replaced
3. Brand new flooring
4. Fresh, repaired walls
5. Giant fun murals!
6. New seating areas
and...
7. Spruced up foyer to boot

Here's a glimpse of the Before (gasp)...

No inspiration in there... so here is where I'm finding it-

The current carpet in the main bowling area... perfect start for the revived space!

Here's the flooring we are going with:

...and paint colors to match.

We are waiting for the mural sketches and will almost be ready to go!

I'll keep you updated with our progress, but I'd love for you
to pay them a visit after the transformation!

Since we are still in the planning stages for a short bit,
let me know what you'd like to see in
the Party Room...
we may just have to fit it in!

Until next time,
