Taking the Steps to Spruce your Staircase

No longer do you have to think of staircases as a "pain" to climb, or dread each step.

We've discovered the secret to making them more beautiful with every level! (we can't speak to the cardio workout you'll get climbing them though ;)

This beautiful staircase of our sweet clients at their beach house has inspired us to dig deeper into staircase design.

Everything from material, shape, size and construction can form what a staircase looks and feels like, and what design mantra it gives.

A closed staircase. This creates choppiness in a space that may be needed to delineate areas. By the use of a color change on the staircase, it adds to the modern black and white feel.

Change of Material: From stone to wood siding, this staircase can now become versatile with the use of textures.

Center support: A seemingly floating staircase is constructed by the use of one center beam throughout the bottom of this staircase giving it an open and airy appearance,

Floating and enclosed baluster: Not the typical "baluster" .... connected from the step to the ceiling for an unconventional support.

Metal + Wood: The under side can be just as important as the tread. With an exposed base, this gives the design a chance to shine with industrial love.

Floating with Side Support: Instead of a center support, this staircase went with side support and an open riser giving a floating appearance.

Make your staircase the extraordinary

Client Project: How we are Incorporating Geometrics in a New Build

Back to the basics here at TCI --

GEOMETRY.

Remember when you were sitting in geometry class in high school? Remember the shapes and patterns you learned?

Well we are pulling out all the GEOMETRICS in our current design,
in a modern house build.

How can you incorporate geometrics in a new construction?

1. Trimwork:
Check out these rectangular patterned trim work pieces on this wall.  By adding just a simple pattern in a large scale can make a huge impact!

2. Staircase:
Out with the curvy balusters and in with the geometric shapes.

3. Tilework:
No need for boring, bland tile .... pop up the color and pattern with tile that looks similar to this! We are using this modern tile in a new TCI build!

A large scale subway tile laid on a straight lay with a stunning accent tile vertically through the pattern brings many different geometric ideas to the table.

One of our favorite tile designs we are currently using:

SO , are you ready to go back to GEOMETRY class for DESIGN?

TCI's One of a Kind Entrances: Part 2: The Stairway

Continuing with our series on ENTRANCES and ensuring they make just the right impact to set the stage for a house ... we bring you STAIRCASES.

Did you know so much can change within a stairway to really set a whole
new look?

Take this recent completed project by TCI for example, this clean and simple staircase is made up of many parts:

- simplistic balusters
- wood treads and painted white risers to set each step apart
- unique assembly of the baluster adhering to the staircase. Instead of just coming straight down into the tread of the stair, it wraps around the stair itself and is joined in beneath

Take a look below for several of our IN CONSTRUCTION staircases that are currently being built, and some tips to creating the perfect stairway.

1. Ease of turns and directions in a staircase - a quick and simple landing can provide just the needed break of the eye visually, and physically as you continue up the stairway

2. Geometric Balusters: We love getting creative with the baluster designs ..
as long as it stays clean and simple. Nothing too ornate.

3. Mix of Materials: Mixing an iron baluster and rail with a wood step gives the
staircase something to boast about.

(Two views of an in-progress TCI build)

4. Lastly, add something unique! This may have nothing to do with the staircase itself. Like this completed TCI project below: We are loving this modern wood floral that just transforms this wall and brings all the attention to this entrance!

Thanks for staying tuned for our series on Entrances!

Wood Balusters - How to Create a Fresh Staircase

A clean take on staircase balusters --
with a little wood and a coat of paint
Read ON!!!
In this area of Texas we see a lot of THIS when it comes to staircases and balusters:

But we prefer not to make a staircase busy with lots of curves and wrought iron.

Why not use a material that is even MORE readily available
and create something new and unique??

A new favorite is to create geometric symmetry with wooden balusters. No longer are "wood staircases" a thing of the past, or a "cheap" alternative to iron.

Use the imagination to create squares, patterns and shapes from the wood and make your banister something to be talked about!

Even just the simplest of shapes -- a square baluster, can create such a clean "craftsman" style look that is easily combined with a transitional design.

In some situations you could even carve alternating
patterns in the wood for a custom touch.

This look has been used many times in the northeast US in design, but we are revamping it and bringing it to Texas for a new and refreshing taste!

Will YOU step outside the box??

Client Project: Geometric Staircase Runners

Many times while designing a clients home, we get the question...should our staircase be carpeted or wood? We think we have found a great solution to that open ended question!

First... Who lives there? If this is your main staircase, think twice about installing wood if there
are kiddos in the house- A) Slip and fall down factor and B) NOISE!

Our client, New York, New York, didn't have children in the home, however,
we wanted that WOW! factor in the front foyer. Check out what we did..

DURING: Selections

 AFTER: !

So read on and see why a geometric patterned runner down the center of the
staircase is a great idea for many reasons!

1.There is 2 main ways to accomplish this runner... you can create a "Hollywood runner"
which hugs every nook and cranny of a staircase, with the carpet affixed to the tread,
around the nose and to the riser; or a "waterfall runner" which falls directly from the
nose of the tread to the back of the next tread without being affixed to the riser face in between. Either style creates a great palette for a bold geometric pattern.

2. Tight geometric patterns can hide dirt and tracks easily!

3. Large scale patterns make the space feel more grand and larger.

4. Finding a geometric pattern that accentuates the flow of your staircase can help
with the flow of your space.

5. A runner makes for a great rug at staircase landings.

6. Each style creates a new home of its own. It is a great way to jump start the design of your home!

Try it!
