De-Clutter without going Minimalist

Piggy-backing on our "DeCLUTTER" blogging trend this week, we have realized that many people might associate de cluttering with "minimalism" or extreme modern. BUT it doesn't have to be.

This is how to achieve a less cluttered home with some love:

1. Go up the walls - "declutter first, storage second". Whether it's in bookcases or built ins, use those walls to hide the clutter.

2. Take FULL advantage of hallways: Mud rooms, storage benches and more.

3. Tame the kitchen - put away unused appliances. Hide as many things.

4. Secret storage is key: From storage ottomans to fully enclosed closets, hiding is the name of the game.

5. Use what you love: This room is far from minimalist, yet it is completely clutter free!

The blog world is buzzing with tons of organization ideas, yet implementing is another story in my case.

How about organization?? Is that one of your resolutions?!

Check out these ideas BHG put out for those like us that love to organize!

1. Separate with Stylish Items
How many stacks of napkins, fabric, or papers do you have that need to be sorted? Go to your nearest office supply store and find a cute clamp for all your organizational needs ;)

2. Visable Storage
If you can see it...FIX IT! Take a trip to Target...buy some clear crates and get to sorting.
You'll be happy you did... I was:)

3. Stand up Straight
Everything looks more organized when it is neatly stacked. Use two pieces of fabric and some beans insert to make a make-shift book end!

4. Ledge Logic
Why not make use of the side of that wall shelf?? A running calendar awaits you.

5. Handle Space
I don't know about your house, but items like scarfs, ties and belts get quickly tangled and thrown on the floor around here! Find a favorite handle at Home Depot for an easy storage solution!

Happy Spring Cleaning!!

A Totally Organized New Year in 5 Steps

We hope everyone had a great New Year celebration!

Its a fresh start, a new year and what better way to ring it in but to organize and make ready all your spaces for good use??

Where to begin, how to start? TCI is here to tell you! We've searched and complied a list for you:

Start with the Kitchen:
- Begin with the large appliances and clean them out first
- Tuck away small appliances to clear countertop space
- Work top to bottom by cleaning out cabinets and getting rid of items unneeded

2. Continue to the Bathrooms:
- Deep Clean
- Declutter by rolling towels and washcloths and storing them neatly
- Buy organizing bins to store tiny toiletries that create dirt and mess
- Keep it up! Continue to keep things clean and put items back where you got them

3. Focus on the Family Room:
- It's easy to clutter this space. Its the most used and loved area, Start by stacking books, folding blankets, setting pillows up straight and creating order to the room
- Dust and Vacuum. This always helps
- Furniture upholstery- Protect your surfaces with fabric protectant!
- Add a few touches - new pillows, a new accessory

4. Kids Spaces:
I'm going to guess if you've got kids, you've given up on having an organized home. But guess what? You don't have to!
- Deep Clean to start
- Label bins and teach your kids with a leveling system
- Clean out old toys
- Create zones for reading, sleeping and playing throughout the room
- Start with one area at a time. Playroom, bedroom etc

Back To School Organization

It's that TIME OF YEAR again!! Who is ready?
BACK TO SCHOOL!!
How are you going to handle the influx of papers, activities and supplies??

The first thing that will help with keeping the kids (and yourself) organized during the school year is a central area where all our tips below can take place.

This mud room/office area at a beautiful Flowermound home we recently completed shows many ways you can put our tips to use! Read on to find out how!

Not only can this be an organized space ... it can be beautiful too! With custom wallpaper and built in units, talk about IDEAL organization!

4 Tips on How TO organize your BACK TO SCHOOL Life:

 1. Have a place to store their "papers" and goodies they will continuously come through the door with stacks of. Whether its a counter with trays or specific drawers for each kid, see what works for your family.

2. Desk Area. Have a place where they can do homework and keep their supplies "hidden" in drawers or baskets.

3. Home Base. Have a place near the back door for reminders, such as a chalkboard!

4. Hooks, Hooks and more Hooks. You need to have a place to hang their jackets, backpacks and lunch boxes ... otherwise you WILL have it all in a pile on the floor.

And our favorite Back to School accessory --- These weekly "stickies"! With space to write reminders, homework and activities and then conveniently stick it on a mirror or in the car for all to see!

Good Luck and Happy Back-to-School to ALL!

Get Organized and Look Good!

I don't know about you guys - But each year, I tell myself I WILL
be more organized THIS year.

And I'm on a mission.... I'm headed into my own master bathroom remodel,
so it's time to clean out the clutter and when it goes back,
it needs to go back in STYLE!

Here are 4 good reasons to be organized and HOW to do it while looking good!

1. Use colorful boxes to hide the "junk":
Just the soft rainbow of coordinating colors makes me happy. AND makes me want to keep being organized (that's the key... if it's pretty, it makes you want to keep it up!!)

2. Labels, Labels, Labels:
Not only do they help to sort different items, it also helps the brain to see everything in an organized fashion and not in disarray.

3. More Pretty:
Why do file folders have to be "manilla" colored? I say bring out the patterns and it will sure make me want to keep those papers filed more!

4. Get a Planner:
Do it. I know, I know ... I can hear it now... "but it's all on my laptop, my phone etc!" . Well yes, but there's nothing like good ol' fashion paper and pen. AND it's proven, if you physically write it down ... you WILL remember it more.

GOOD LUCK (to us all!)

HOW TO...Keep you Organized

The blog world is buzzing with tons of organization ideas,
yet implementing is another story in my case.

I spent the afternoon helping watching and directing
my friend Patty as she cleaned out her closet and returned
home ready to overhaul my own.

Then I sat down... and now I'm here.

Happy Early Spring Cleaning!!

My new Little Black Dress

Monday am...

-woke up late (a rarity for me)
-drank lots of Starbucks (normal)
-stumbled into my organized closet (wait...no)

All true until I got to the organized part...

But I found hope when I spotted this today-

Leave it to The Container Store to come up with yet
another use for our favorite
Little Black Dress!

Now, I do have a few, but none that works it like this!

A place for necklaces, bracelets and earrings which hangs on a hook
or curtain rod. 39 clear pockets on one side and 24 loops on the other .

They don't call it the Happy Organized Home Sale for nothing!

I'm going-

Until next time,

Man Caves vs. Mom Caves

As we all know, “If Mom’s not happy, nobody is happy”, so it is now fitting that
we are seeing the creation of “Mom Caves” surface on the interior design scene.

Recently, I was asked to contribute to an article for the Plano Star Courier and here are my thoughts... and for the complete article with more pictures, click here!

For years, we have created “Man Caves for our husbands and dads to
retreat to a secret space to unwind.  They have their theater rooms, gaming
rooms, cigar bars, wine grottos, masculine libraries, home offices,
over the top garages, outdoor living… and the list goes on!

Moms are now carving out small spaces for the to escape from it all and when
the door is closed, mom is off duty.  These Mom Caves actually provide a
place for Moms to work or explore a passion… Moms are doers!  Yet at the same
time, the cave must look pretty and be a place she wants to stay a while.

The Mom Cave also needs to be the sanctuary to hide in if she feels
like doing nothing… really tune out the grind of everyday life.
Leave the guilt at the door and take the time to recharge!

What?

-Small office (pay bills in style -equip with soft lamp and yummy scented candle)
-Craft room (a lot of storage and ability for the scrapbooking to take over and be a mess!)
-Meditation/Reading room (comfortable sofa or chaise, music, soft lighting and blankets)
-Girl time (enough seating for girlfriends, small beverage bar, coffee cups and martini glasses)
-Sewing room (storage for fabrics, large working table, good lighting)
-Guilty pleasure TV (watch the Real Housewives…alone!)

Where?

-CLOSET! (use vertical space for storage shelving)
-Window seat niche
-Master sitting area (use folding screen)
-Guest bedroom
-Underneath a staircase
-Staircase landing

How?

Since the space may be small, make it a jewel box and add:
-Gorgeous wallpaper
-Feminine chandelier
-Lots of texture (fluffy pillows, velvet and silk throws, plush rug)
-Patterned fabric storage boxes
-Soft paint palette (create a color scheme that is completely different than the rest of the house)
-Personalize it to you (mementos, framed family photos, favorite things)

Rules?

-Skip the overstuffed man recliner and make it a space that makes you smile!

Here's some fun!

Olioboard.com created a contest to submit concept boards
based on the artist's view of the perfect Mom Cave...very creative

For me, it is about quiet time… I can imagine my space with soft lighting,
a chaise lounge, stacks and stacks of design magazines, scissors, file folders
and sticky notes (maybe my laptop and a minifridge!).

A place where I can declutter “my stuff” which makes me a happy mom!

Until next time,
