Functional Kitchen = Add a Desk

What is the latest "fad" in kitchen design??

ADDING a "kitchen office" to the space!
What more could the homemaker, cook or mom of the house want?? Yes, a place to drop her keys, store her "treasures" and look cute while doing it.

Here are some tips to make the kitchen office adorable, effective and usable:

1. Takes a "home" outside of the main kitchen work area:

2. Provides a place to charge electronics

3. Has a spacious desk

 4. Becomes the "pit stop" for notes, reminders and mail

 5. Has bookshelves for cookbooks

How cute are these designs? I know you want one too!!

Creative Desks for Gloomy Days

If you live around Dallas, TX ... you know it feels like it has either been snowing, sleeting or raining for several weeks now! While we still get out and about to meet with clients and be creative ... we have been spending a lot of time watching the rain from our desks.

Why not have a really CREATIVE desk to work from?!

You desk can define what work comes out of you. Do you want it to be fresh, new and inspired? Start by finding a desk that is those exact things.

Here are a few of our favorites from around the web.

The Dip Desk:
With a perfect notch for a book or two, this desk separates the two work spaces perfectly for multiple users to function adequately.

The Reclaimed Wood Desk:
This screams natural. And natural always helps the mind feel refreshed and renewed.

The Nook Desk:
Having a desk custom made to the form of a nook can help by saving space but also opening up a new view to see through beautiful windows in the comfort of work.

The Well Lit Desk:
It is always important to have great lighting while working. No one likes to strain their eyes or squint at a piece of paper. This design shows a new and fun way to bring light into your space.

The Chalkboard Nook Desk:
Do you find yourself writing on post-it notes all day long? And then loosing those post-it notes? WE DO. Why not write it on chalkboard? That can't get lost, and it looks adorable.

Hope you feel inspired to go out, get to work, and be creative!

Contemporary Home Office Remodel

A home office...what do YOU use a space like this for? Work, emails, crafts, storage....the list goes on and on. But the one thing everyone wants as they spend time in a space such as this is to feel happy, light and clean.

We think we were able to accomplish all of these things in our most recent completed project...this contemporary home office with a slate blue and orange color palette. The custom built-in cabinet was painted in a coordinating grey-blue and given a light umber glaze to accentuate the cabinetry lines.

The writing desk from Hekman is a perfect base to this light, colorful room. It is paired with an executive swivel chair from Sam Moore that incorporated our slate blue color. The guest chair, from Vanguard, is upholstered in a multi colored fabric that brings our color palette together.
The custom cornice boards with unique nailhead design was made by Kemtex here in Dallas, along with the window seat cushion and pillows. Adorable sitting area.

The client's young daughter even has her own special place in this home office;) We used Global View's orange "Petal Power" wall decor to make her little space her own. She even has her own desk and custom ottoman that pulls in all the bright orange!

The orange and cream rug is also a beautiful Global Views find that really gives the room that perfect punch of bold pattern. See the clock on the side wall? It was made by a made named George Nelson who was an American industrial designer, and one of the founders of American Modernism. While Director of Design for the Herman Miller furniture company both Nelson, and his design studio, George Nelson Associates, Inc., designed much of the 20th century's most iconic modernist furniture.

Now what you've all been waiting for...a before and after image to "wow" you!

Man Caves vs. Mom Caves

As we all know, “If Mom’s not happy, nobody is happy”, so it is now fitting that
we are seeing the creation of “Mom Caves” surface on the interior design scene.

Recently, I was asked to contribute to an article for the Plano Star Courier and here are my thoughts... and for the complete article with more pictures, click here!

For years, we have created “Man Caves for our husbands and dads to
retreat to a secret space to unwind.  They have their theater rooms, gaming
rooms, cigar bars, wine grottos, masculine libraries, home offices,
over the top garages, outdoor living… and the list goes on!

Moms are now carving out small spaces for the to escape from it all and when
the door is closed, mom is off duty.  These Mom Caves actually provide a
place for Moms to work or explore a passion… Moms are doers!  Yet at the same
time, the cave must look pretty and be a place she wants to stay a while.

The Mom Cave also needs to be the sanctuary to hide in if she feels
like doing nothing… really tune out the grind of everyday life.
Leave the guilt at the door and take the time to recharge!

What?

-Small office (pay bills in style -equip with soft lamp and yummy scented candle)
-Craft room (a lot of storage and ability for the scrapbooking to take over and be a mess!)
-Meditation/Reading room (comfortable sofa or chaise, music, soft lighting and blankets)
-Girl time (enough seating for girlfriends, small beverage bar, coffee cups and martini glasses)
-Sewing room (storage for fabrics, large working table, good lighting)
-Guilty pleasure TV (watch the Real Housewives…alone!)

Where?

-CLOSET! (use vertical space for storage shelving)
-Window seat niche
-Master sitting area (use folding screen)
-Guest bedroom
-Underneath a staircase
-Staircase landing

How?

Since the space may be small, make it a jewel box and add:
-Gorgeous wallpaper
-Feminine chandelier
-Lots of texture (fluffy pillows, velvet and silk throws, plush rug)
-Patterned fabric storage boxes
-Soft paint palette (create a color scheme that is completely different than the rest of the house)
-Personalize it to you (mementos, framed family photos, favorite things)

Rules?

-Skip the overstuffed man recliner and make it a space that makes you smile!

Here's some fun!

Olioboard.com created a contest to submit concept boards
based on the artist's view of the perfect Mom Cave...very creative

For me, it is about quiet time… I can imagine my space with soft lighting,
a chaise lounge, stacks and stacks of design magazines, scissors, file folders
and sticky notes (maybe my laptop and a minifridge!).

A place where I can declutter “my stuff” which makes me a happy mom!

Until next time,

Local Plano Dermatologist gets a Makeover!

Okay, maybe not a facial makeover, but a spacial makeover... (reaching??!).

Still getting back into the groove from vacation and am happy to say that I completed another commercial installation this week...this time at a dermatologist office in Plano.  While I love designing residential projects, corporate spaces are right up there with them! At times, we can step out of the botox  box a bit more- and for Dr. Skin, I believe we did!

For the record, the ultimate goal for Dr. Skin was to provide his clients the most comfortable chairs without breaking the budget.  We both agree that we tried every known chair to man but in the end... nailed it!

As most design projects begin, I started with completing a computerized floor plan to determine the maximum amount of seating we could include in the waiting room while still allowing adequate traffic flow.  With four options presented, Dr. Skin chose this plan-

Now, that we got the nuts and bolts out of the way, I was wide open for inspiration direction with this project with the exception of the carpet, walls and artwork. So I chose an existing piece that I loved and rolled from there... here it is-

The turquoise, aqua and gold lead the way which lead me to this beautiful fabric combination:

Here is where we started...

And where we ended:

After
Changes include more seating, more storage, more comfort and style!

(side note: Spiderman kid's nook was also existing:)

Check out the additional before and after shots of the reception area:

Interestingly enough when I was at Market a few weeks ago, I did happen upon the same color combination in a showroom and knew that I had struck gold with this project!

Another beauty by Sterling Industries

So, if you want to wait for your doctor in the most comfortable chairs in town, call me
and I will give you the scoop!

Until next time,
Traci
