Unique Functions for the "Sore Thumbs" of Design

Columns ....

Columns, Columns, Columns!

Many times in design, there are the necessary items that we may not think are the "key" to design.
But when things such as columns come into play, we like to think of ways to turn these "sore thumbs" into "WOW" factors.

What can you do about columns?!
SHAPE: Create a new and different shape with the column

MATERIALS: Use a unique material in a new and different way

FUNCTIONAL: Turn a column into a functional piece of furniture

STORAGE: Enlarge the column and use it for unique storage

Think outside the box!!

Bring out the Spring Design

With last weekend being beautiful and sunny, we got a whiff of Springtime here in Texas!
Of course, Texas proved to be Texas yesterday as it was rainy and cold....

Finding the Bohemian in Design

A design trend that we have been seeing spark lately is the
"bohemian" style in many ways.

Before we even knew it, we had created our own little seemingly bohemian room for my 17 year old daughter! See HERE for the full post on this surprise!

But what IS "bohemian" really? And how do you channel it??
We have a few tips to get you in the know on this new trend!

1. Embrace the botanicals:
Succulents, wildflowers, you name it. Bring these inside to celebrate all day long.

2. Don't be afraid of textiles:
Mix, match, and don't match all at the same time!!

3. Create a focal point and curate:
Figure out a small area to feature something unique and different, and create a story for it.

4. Bring the indoors out:
We always say bring the outdoors in .. but in this case ... open your indoors to the beautiful outside!!

Step out and be different. Thats what design is all about ;)

Gold is the New Silver!

While we still like our silver … TCI is branching out and
LOVING gold accents in our latest designs!
This is a Powder Bath at the Mansion on Turtle Creek!

For a splash of the unexpected, we think that gold is
no longer your grandma's favorite accessory.

It is bold, bright, and unique.

CHECK OUT WHY WE THINK SO!

- Brass mixed with blue is a favorite color combo of ours. It brings a touch of
modern in with the old, making the perfect blend.
Lighting and even hardware are ways to bring this look in.

** See the gold cup pulls on the blue painted cabinets!?

- Dark, rich, wood tones and gold. Mmmm yes please! This knot ball is a perfect conversation piece, but also adds a new color to the space that coordinates with pillows and accessories throughout.

- Gold BRIGHTENS. Yes, sounds like something you might already know. BUT if you are bold enough to darken your space by painting walls black, or navy… you can quickly add light (spunk) to the space by bringing in gold in the plumbing fixtures, hardware or wall decor!

WILL YOU GO FOR THE GOLD?!

Leave it or Revive it - The answer to painting your brick

Brick -- Do you paint it or leave it
and let it have "character"??

We unravel the mystery for you. The answer is…. it depends ;)
You knew it wasn't a YES or NO answer didn't you??

When to PAINT IT:

(this simple coat of gray paint covered up a dark red brick and changed the appearance of the whole living room!) See the full TCI project HERE

1. When it is a "heavy" brick that makes the room seem dark and dingy… a fresh coat of a light color paint can instantly revive it to a bright, happy, and spacious area.
2. When there is another "showstopper" in the room such as an amazing light fixture, or an architectural detail, the natural brick could take away from the focal point.
3. When you are going for a more contemporary look -- this may go without saying, but a simple solid painted brick gives a much more clean appearance to the space

(This white painted brick- southern style home is a stunning find nestled in the beautiful landscape)

When to LEAVE IT:
(The natural brick is the perfect backdrop to this bold masculine space)
See the full TCI project HERE
1. When it serves as the jumping off point for the color palette -- Use the brick color to form your concept for the entire space and take advantage of the natural character.
2. When the brick is on the floor -- it hides dirt amazingly
3. When you are searching for more rustic and texture in your design

There are so many options and ways to incorporate brick the
RIGHT way to make the perfect room.
