New Home Journals : Courtney's House -- Moving In

HI! Courtney here --

Well it is finally official ... WE.ARE.IN.

Because of the craziest Texas-February-Weather ever ... the snow and sleet kept pushing our close date back, and back, and back. We thought we may not get in till summer if all this snow didn't melt!!

This is literally what our house looked like on closing day -- and believe it or not.. WE CLOSED in the snow! I was ready to rent everybody sled dogs, if they would just get to our closing.

After the chaotic closing, we finally got our things moved into the home. If you've ever moved before... you'll be with me on the fact that it isn't the most fun experience.

We are now surfacing from the tops of boxes and miscellaneous items that we have no clue where they go and beginning to see our floors once again.

While we are NO-WHERE near done... we are getting closer. I've taken a few iPhone pics to walk you through our work-in-progress home.

The KITCHEN:
My favorite part of this kitchen might be the glass sphere pendants... or maybe the gray backsplash... either way, it's a toss up and I love how it turned out.

 The Breakfast Nook:

We are enjoying the indirect afternoon light we get through these windows and
how it brightens up the space!

Like I said -- work in progress (and iPhone pics ... note climbing baby on side table), but this angle shows how our family room opens to the kitchen for great entertaining purposes.

The DINING ROOM:
This was where all our boxes sat while we unpacked them! So needless to say, this room has come a long way. While art and accessories are still to come, the fact that the boxes are gone, the furniture is in and the drapes are hung wins a gold medal in my book!

The ENTRYWAY and HOME OFFICE:

Our small home office serves just the purpose we needed it to!
... Storage and a desk. And we love it!

NOW.... dare I show you the REALLY unfinished areas of the home?!? (I'm cringing just thinking about it)... ok if you promise you'll trust me that it IS going to come together.

The two biggest, last items we are waiting on to be completed are the
stone fireplace/mantel and the TV installation guys.

As you can see from this angle .. there should be a wall mounted TV in between the two art pieces and the middle piece should be on the mantel that isn't hung yet.
BUT we will get there.

This is our biggest wait. I, (of course) didn't order enough stone for the fireplace (note the missing tile up the sides and at the bottom), and the hearth stone (which will be a gray quartz slab) hasn't been cut yet.  So for now, we stare at this beauty and step over the pretty gray stained wood beam mantel sitting on the floor of our garage
as we await these last pieces!

There you have it! Our work-in-progress, but oh-so-happy house. We are ready to see it finally REALLY completed ;)
Stay tuned for REAL pics when it is done!

Courtney's New House Journals - and Modern Hearth Ideas

Hi TCI Readers! Courtney Here--
Welcome to our home...
We have WALLS!
(the entryway looking into the family room and the family room looking into the kitchen)

After just a few days, the sheetrock has been hung and brick has been laid.
One by one this home is coming together!!

(family room)

And now that means I am going to have to start finalizing some decisions....

Lighting...backsplash .... and the current issue ... the hearth stone.

*Because of where our firebox is, we are required to have a hearth by fire code.
The stone surround is a linear 12x24 vein cut limestone. So for the hearth, I thought it would be interesting to do a  rough-edge natural gray stone slab set on the floor.*
This has proved harder to find than I thought. BUT i haven't given up hope yet!

Have you considered stone hearths??
Here are a few modern floating stone slab hearth ideas out there that we love:

 link

This one is interesting. The stone is cut and laid in a herringbone pattern...
which blends nicely with its surroundings.

And why not throw in a Christmas hearth to top it all off ;)

Dress up your hearths for Christmas and I will keep you
posted on what we decide to make ours out of!! (hopefully ..... )

New Home Journals : Courtney's Edition

New Home Journals: Courtney Edition!

Hello! - Courtney here -- to report back on the
changes and plans for our new home build.

Our foundation was poured today! YES!

Of course there was a few hold ups at the city... getting our permit.
But we are finally cleared and ready to begin.

This is the mess we are looking at ;-/
But it all means good things...things are moving along!!
Last week they routed for plumbing and prepped for the foundation --
That was when this pic above was taken.

Right now, as the subs are making a mess of our lot, we are in the process of finalizing the finishes and design for the interior of the home!

I wanted to share a few of my favorite pieces that we are incorporating:

FIRST: The linear stone fireplace:
*Concept Pic
Maybe one of the things I'm most excited about.
The vein cut "Mare Bianco Travertine" 12x24 Stone fireplace surround. I love the gray/white/cream linear lines in the tile and love
that it gives off a light and airy feeling:
(I'm still trying to decide whether to add a wrap around mantel or not... suggestions?!)

BUT We actually found a look-a-like at half the cost -- see pic below!

Here is an installation pic of the stone being used in a flooring application:

SECOND: Our bold graphite and white bathroom.
Instead of going "light" in the bathroom-- i went "bold". With dark gray/graphite tile in the shower and painted charcoal cabinets, the lighter gray flooring will pop and the white quartz countertops will shine! (if i can keep them clean ... ;-/)
*Concept Pic
The (impossible to clean) shower will look similar to this image --

THIRD: The Kitchen!
With white modified shaker style cabinetry and white granite countertops, I've decided to go with a light warm gray 2x12 glass tile backsplash --
to be laid on a straight lay!

*Concept Pic for colors - The actual backsplash tile will be
2"x12" and not laid in a brick pattern.
*Concept Pic - Very similar to this backsplash without the gloss coating
FOURTH: The Vent Hood.
Also one of my most favorite things about the home.
This modern wall mount glass canopy vent hood from Frigidaire will be a perfect complement to the stainless steel appliances and light white kitchen.
Another plus -- it has DISHWASHER safe filters! How easy is that?! You just pop them out and throw them in the dishwasher. That's my kind of "cleaning."

Stay tuned next week for more on Terra's New House Journals!!

New Home Journals - Courtney's House

Part 2 of our NEW HOME JOURNALS!

Today we are excited to walk you through Courtney's
beginning stages of her family's home build!

And like we started off with Terra's -- We first kick off with THE LOT!

On a little over a 1/3rd of an acre in McKinney, this cul-de-sac lot will give plenty of room for their growing family to have years of play-worthy backyard space!

The full brick home with accented cedar garage doors and shutters
will provide a nice contrast to the landscaping around.

Courtney chose to use all rectangular and square windows instead of half-moon or eyebrow windows throughout the home. This makes life SO much easier when it comes to window treatments as well ;)

A few of the home specs!:
3700 Sq Ft
4 Bedroom
3.5 Baths
Custom Kitchen
Family Room
Media Room
Gameroom/Playroom

 SECOND FLOOR:

Many of the finishes are completely selected and concepts are already starting to form! Courtney's vision for the home is light and airy. The minimalistic view of "less is more" will be put into play throughout the space.
